At least 12 people won't be able to return to their homes Thanksgiving night after a fire consumed half an apartment building at a Columbia apartment complex.

Columbia fire spokesman Brick Lewis said the cause of the fire was determined to be an improper discarding of fireplace ashes, with damages estimated at $350,000.

Fire was visible when crews arrived to the Charbonneau Apartments near Greystone Blvd. around 6:45 p.m., Lewis said, and no injuries have been reported.

The Red Cross will be helping those who have been displaced due to the fire.
