A man was arrested in Orangeburg County after investigators say he dragged a Sheriff's deputy alongside his car following a traffic stop.

According to the incident report, the deputy pulled over Daniel Braxton after he realized the car Braxton was driving matched the description of a vehicle investigators were seeking in connection with a serious of burglaries and thefts in the area.

The report says the deputy noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the car while he was questioning Braxton. Braxton denied that anything illegal was in the vehicle, the deputy said.

According to the report, the deputy then asked Braxton to turn off the truck and exit the car, but Braxton was noncompliant.

The deputy said he then reached inside the driver's side door in an effort to open it himself, but Braxton then put his foot on the accelerator and took off with the deputy in tow.

After a bit of a struggle, the deputy fell from the side of the car and fired several shots at the truck, the report said.

Following a chase and an accident where Braxton managed to elude custody, the suspect was later arrested in Dorchester County.

Braxton was charged with failure to stop for blue lights and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

SLED is currently investigating the incident.
