ANDERSON COUNTY, SC (WYFF) - A 76-year-old Upstate woman was killed in an exchange of gunfire with three men, according to a coroner.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said Dorothy Hendrix was shot to death at her home early Saturday morning.  She suffered gunshot wounds to her right shoulder that hit an artery, and to the lower right abdomen. Shore said Hendrix died from blood loss.

The sheriff's office said a neighbor reported gunshots at the home on Rayben Lane just after 1 a.m.

"She'd help anybody. Didn't even have to ask for it. Anybody she would help," brother Ronnie Lollis said.

Shore said Hendrix came home to find three men outside her house and became involved in a gunfight with them.

Lt. Sheila Cole with the sheriff's office said investigators interviewed a hospitalized suspect, who is listed in stable condition.

Investigators said the motive for Saturday's incident was robbery. The victim's purse was found across the street from her home, near the area where the suspect who was shot was found, according to Cole.

"Investigators will now confer with the solicitor's office; possible charges are pending. The investigation is still ongoing," Cole said.
