FOREST ACRES, SC (WIS) -
Police have arrested the man they believe was driving a car that went airborne and landed on a Forest Acres roof early Saturday morning.
A Columbia Police Department spokesperson says officers took 21-year-old Antwon Ashley into custody overnight.
He's been charged with reckless driving, driving under suspension, hit and run with property damage, failure to stop for blue lights, littering and trafficking crack cocaine. Police say Ashley is a gang member.
Investigators say Ashley was the driver of a vehicle that was involved in an illegal drug transaction near Senate and Heidt Streets around 2 a.m. Saturday.
The vehicle did not have its headlights on and the suspect was driving erratically, so an officer attempted to stop the driver, Officer Jennifer Timmons said.
Ashley did not stop and continued driving, Timmons said.
After following the same path, the officer saw Ashley had wrecked and the car ended up on top of a house on Grace Hill Road, Timmons said.
There is an embankment next to this house and a sharp curve. As the driver was being chased by police, he missed the curve, went over the embankment, was airborne for a few seconds and then landed on the roof.
Timmons said the family was home at the time but there were no injuries reported.
"At 2:30 a.m. we heard a loud bang," homeowner Steve Taylor said. "It woke us up, we didn't know what was going on and I walked out the front door and there were two policemen in the yard and one of them informed me there was a car on our roof. And I stepped out into the yard and looked back up and there was a car on the roof and it was alarming as you can imagine."
The car was removed from the roof with a crane around 6 a.m., Taylor said.
Ashley was nowhere to be found, but crack cocaine and cash were recovered from inside the vehicle and taken into evidence, Timmons said.
Police have also arrested Sharman Springs and charged her with providing false information to the police. The vehicle involved in the crash was registered to her, Timmons said.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating the wreck.
