The Art Center hosted its annual Holiday Art Sale and Silent Auction Saturday.

There was a wide variety of pieces made by some of Columbia's artists.

The event also featured artwork from participants in the Creative Journey program from the Wounded Warrior Project at Fort Jackson.

Creative Journey is the only program of its kind in the country for active duty members of the military and exists as a result of a partnership between the City of Columbia and Fort Jackson, officials said.

The program features a monthly arts workshop designed to help soldiers in the Wounded Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Jackson recover from health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries.

The program has been in existence for nearly a year and was developed as a result of the collaborative efforts between the Parks and Recreation Department's Cultural Arts Center Coordinator, Brenda Oliver and local artist and Gold Star Mother, Suzy Shealy.

"The program is indeed doing what it was designed to do — provide art as a path to healing as part of the recovery process," said Oliver. "Our vision is to expand Creative Journey to veterans in other branches of the armed services."

Proceeds benefit the Creative Journey program at the Art Center.

The event was held at the Earlewood Community Center.
