Posted: Updated:

The South Carolina Department of Transportation on Sunday will begin a 20 month project to widen and rehabilitate approximately 21 miles of Interstate 26 in Lexington and Calhoun Counties southeast of Columbia.

The $76 million project will include widening 10 miles of roadway from four lanes to six lanes between I-77 to Old Sandy Run Road.

In addition, the interstate will be rehabilitated, which includes resurfacing and replacement of guardrails, from Sandy Run Road to Caw Caw Road.

Four lanes in the widening zone will be open for most of the duration of the project.

DOT officials said more than 59,000 vehicles travel that corridor each day.
