Friends hope to pay for college for son of fallen marathoner

Posted: Updated:

Less than a week after a seemingly healthy 35-year-old Columbia man collapsed and eventually died following his completion of the Savannah Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, friends have initiated a fund to help pay for his 2-year-old son's college education.

Jake Zeman died on November 9 due to a previously undetected heart condition.

Jake's friends have partnered with the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series to raise money for Jack Zeman's college fund.

Friends say Jack will never know his father, but through this effort, he will "know his father's heart and that he was well loved."

According to the fund's website, all donations will be paid to an established 529 college fund for Jack Zeman.

Zeman was employed by the University of South Carolina Facilities Planning and Programming Office.

His passion for running began when he ran the 2012 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. He immediately began training for the Savannah marathon.
