MATA to cut down trolley service

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

Memphis Area Transit Authority will cut down trolley service despite setting an all-time record for ridership during the 2013 fiscal year. They hit a 6.1 percent increase over last year's record total.

The new schedule was implemented due to a $4.5 million deficit at MATA.

William Hudson, President and General Manager of MATA, said that while the Madison Line will no longer run on Sundays, there is bus service within one to three blocks of the trolley line.

MATA said its revised trolley schedule matches to the current usage patterns of its riders.

The new schedule will go into effect this Sunday. See the revised schedule below.

Updated hours for the Main Street Line will be:

• 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday

• 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Friday

• 8:30 a.m. to midnight on Saturday

• 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday

The Madison Line will be:

• 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday

• 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday

• No Sunday service

The schedule for the Riverfront Line will not change. It remains:

• 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday

• 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday

• 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday

MATA said there is always the potential for extended hours for special events.
