GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

It was a bitterly cold start to Wednesday in the Upstate, mountains and northeast Georgia and a chill remains in the air.

Temperatures were in the teens and 20s, with wind chills down into the single digits for some western North Carolina towns Wednesday morning. The Upstate felt like the low 20s with a northerly breeze, according to FOX Carolina Meteorologist Nicole Papay.

As the sun came out, temperatures have risen slightly into the 40s in the Upstate and 30s in the mountains.

"Expect sunshine for all of the day, but in the wake of the cold front, we'll only make it into the 40s for everyone," Papay reported.

Even with the slightly warmer temperatures, some places saw some frozen precipitation in the Upstate Wednesday. A FOX Carolina photographer spotted ice formed along the water wheel outside of The Snow Castle on Woodruff Road about 11 a.m.

As the sun sets Wednesday, the night will become very cold. Temperatures will drop to around 27 in the Upstate and 21 in the mountains, which is well below normal for this time of year.

The weather will warm slightly by Thursday, but only back into the low-to-middle 50s with sunshine.

While there is no wintry precipitation in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, some areas reported snow on Tuesday. Enoree, Laurens and Seneca saw a few flakes in the Upstate, while Charlotte saw a quick burst of snow as the system moved through.

Parts of western North Carolina also saw some snow as the cold front moved through the area Tuesday afternoon.

The area will slowly warm up through the week. The chance of rain will return on Friday.
