CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Board of Elections certified last week's results, but the race for Carolina Beach mayor is still alive.
According to the canvassed results, challenger Dan Wilcox edged incumbent mayor Bob Lewis by seven official votes.
Lewis has requested a recount of this race.
"I don't think it's going to change that much. It's only fifteen hundred votes," Lewis said, referring to the total number of votes cast in the race. "To me, that's a small number. It would surprise me if anything really dramatically changed."
Wilcox served one term as a council member from 2007 to 2011. After that, Wilcox lost a bid for mayor to Ray Rothrock, who resigned from office about a year later.
Before his time as an elected leader, Wilcox organized volunteers to improve the town's boardwalk area with the appropriately named Boardwalk Makeover Group.
Wilcox will have to handle on-going issues facing the town of Carolina Beach like flood insurance because of the Biggerts-Waters Act and beach renourisnment as a coastal community.
"This would be a huge civic lesson for a lot of people," Wilcox said. "Every vote counted for everyone of the almost fifteen hundred. Anyone of those seven people swung the vote."
