WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)-A Veterans Day tradition continued in the Port City Monday.

Crowds of young and old gathered at the Wilmington National Cemetery to honor the men and women who have helped defend the United States.  Organizations like the like the Rolling Thunder and Gold Star Mothers were in attendance at the ceremony.

Speakers at the event said that there are 18 thousand veterans currently living in New Hanover County.  The ceremony honored soldiers of the past and present who have served the country through all branches of the military.

Captain Sean Murtagh with the U.S. Coast Guard was one of the key speakers at the event.

"It's always important to honor them and they've done the ultimate sacrifice for us," said Murtagh.

Many of them have passed away defending our liberties and our freedoms and our way of life today.   "It's always very significant and important that we remember that and honor that," Murtagh elaborated.
