TIFTON, GA (WALB) -
Tifton held several events today to honor those who served our
Congressman Austin Scott hosted an event for military families
then spoke at a community celebration where everyone agreed it's important to
recognize those who served our country.
Veterans who served in the Korean, Vietnam and both World
Wars shared memories during their time of service at a reception hosted by Congressman
Austin Scott for veterans and their families.
"It doesn't matter whether you've been Air force or Army or
Marines or Coast Guard, we're all one service we're all here for the country to
support it," said Master Sgt. Aulton White.
White served 36 years in the military. He says our country
would not be where it is today without those who served before him.
"World War I, World War II Veterans, that's the only reason
we're here, that's the only reason we're not speaking Japanese, German or other
languages because of veterans that went before us," said White.
A Veterans Day program at Veteran's Memorial Park
recognized those who served in each branch. The colors were presented by the
Tift County Sheriff Honor Guard and Congressman Scott was the keynote speaker.
Edsel Harrell is a World War two vet and remembers it like it was yesterday.
"I got my tent shot up one time," said Edsel Harrell.
He wants the younger generation to educate themselves on
the sacrifices that veterans made for our country.
"In case you decide or your children decide to go into the
service and have some idea about what to expect," said Harrell.
Vietnam War Veteran, Jimmy Dill, says the contributions
from both active and retired military men should be recognized
"When you're walking in public and you see someone in a
military uniform or maybe with a cap on that shows they have served from years
ago, just say thank you for serving your country," said Jimmy Dill.
"Here's my message to the veterans and to your family, Thank
You," said Congressman Austin Scott.
Those two words
can't be said enough.
Sandra Wood received the Service Appreciation Award for her thirty
plus years of service in helping returning veterans in Tift County receive the
benefits that they've been promised.
This was the first time Congressman Scott held a Veterans Day
appreciation event at his Tifton office.
