BG man turns to community for help opening unique coffee shop

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Bowling Green native has taken to the web to ask others for help funding his dream: to open a third-wave coffee shop.

Ben Vollmar and his wife Cassy are hoping to turn an empty BG store into a coffee shop.

"Coffee has always been really interesting to me," Vollmar said. "It's a community gathering spot, and that's always been really attractive to me, so I wanted to get into the coffee world."

As a recent college graduate and newlywed, Vollmar can't afford it. And he says with the economy, banks aren't willing to give him a loan. So he posted a video on Kickstarter, hoping the community will help him launch Flatlands Coffee.

"If we get enough funding through Kickstarter and reach our goal of $60,000, that will be money we can use as collateral to take out the rest of the loan," he said.

The location they chose for their business is right in the heart of downtown Bowling Green, but it won't be an average coffee shop. Vollmar wants to open a third-wave shop. Most shops carry coffee that has been graded 80 or above, but not Flatlands.

"We're going to be carrying the top of coffee, and so the coffees that you're going to be trying at our shop are going to be 90-plus, and a lot of times within the top 3 percent of coffees," he said.

Vollmar is already brewing coffee 14 different ways, but he considers the industry a journey and says he is working toward perfection.

"The aroma of the coffee, the way it tastes – it should be sweet, not bitter," he said. "That's a common misconception in the coffee customer world, so we want it to be a pleasant experience."
