Eastbound I-20 lane shift ending, westbound next

The sometimes confusing and traffic-clogging lane shift in Interstate 20's eastbound lanes northeast of Columbia is soon coming to an end...in that direction.

South Carolina Department of Transportation officials say the rebuilding of the eastbound lanes between Spears Creek Church Road and I-77 has been completed and traffic will move back to that part of the roadway on Nov. 10.

Both lanes will again have full access to both the Clemson Road and Spears Creek Church Road exits.

A week after the eastbound lanes reopen, the next phase of the 7 mile widening project will begin, which includes splitting westbound lanes in a similar manner.

Beginning on or around Nov. 17, westbound traffic will be shifted. This shift will split the westbound motorists into two separate lanes of traffic bordered by concrete barriers.

DOT officials will release specific details about that traffic pattern in the days leading up to the shift.

The eastbound lane shift lasted approximately four months.

The I-20 widening project is scheduled for completion in spring of 2014.
