A Gilbert teen has a lot to be thankful for. He escaped with his life with only seconds to spare as a train roared across the roadway. His motorcycle, however, didn't fair so well.

A 17-year-old was running late to class at Higley High School and got caught by a train, but his quick thinking saved his life.

Officers said the teen got to the tracks just as the arms were coming down. He knew he wasn't going to be able to stop so instead he thought he needed to get off the bike. He jumped off and let the bike go. He then tried to grab the motorcycle before the train was going to hit it but he couldn't get it off the track and seconds later, the train and bike collided, narrowly missing the teen.

"Pretty close, very lucky he had a helmet on, some leather on his jacket, leather chaps, so his injuries were simply just being shaken but he was pretty close to being struck. Fortunately, he got out of the way," said Gilbert police Sgt. Joe Amaya.

Police said no one was cited in the collision and the student did the right thing by getting out of the way, but they hope this serves as a warning to others to drive the speed limit and pay close attention to your surroundings.
