Self diagnosis apps have benefits, if used correctly

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

There are many of them out there: medical self-diagnosis apps for smart phones that can help people diagnose problems, from determining whether you have the flu, to even an app in the works that can help determine whether you have strep throat.

Valley Doctor Brian Dedinsky says the apps have benefits, but if used improperly, can be dangerous.

"Be cautious. Use the apps carefully," he said.

Dedinsky said apps can help people stay out of the doctor's office if they don't have a serious illness, but he warns people not to rely solely on applications. If there is any concern, reach out to your doctor.

"Every year we see elderly people die around the United States because of the flu, so it's not innocuous. To rely on apps and the computer when appropriate visits to physicians are available is a little bit inappropriate," said Dedinsky.

CBS 5 talked to people at one local cafe about what they thought of self-diagnosing apps, and the responses varied.

"I use them just to check and see, " said Rachael O'Flaherty.

"I decide to go to the doctor if it gets worse. (I don't use) any app," said Anas Elazaraj.
