COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The City of Columbia and Richland County have launched a new alerts program designed to provide time-sensitive information about public safety and community awareness, according to the City of Columbia website.

"When we issue a message about a potential safety hazard or concern, messages will be sent to all standard voice and text communication devices that you have registered, including landline phones, cell phones, email, and more," according to the website.

The service also allows you to choose the locations you want to be contacted about.

You can receive notifications about emergencies that may affect your home, your parents' home, your workplace, and your child's school, as long as those locations are within the boundaries of the City of Columbia, Columbia Water Districts, and Richland County.
