Kershaw County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Lugoff man for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.

Edward Walter Conant , 41, is charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor victim under 16 (2nd degree).

According to Kershaw County sheriff Jim Matthews, on Oct. 16 a KCSO investigator received a call from a physician in Columbia who had treated a girl who had disclosed that Conant had forcibly sexually assaulted her at a home in Kershaw County.

The victim provided investigators with a statement detailing the assaults which occurred on the weekend of Sept. 21. The investigator arranged for a forensic interview by a trained forensic examiner, the results of which confirmed the girl's story, Matthews said.

Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Conant who was already out on bond for narcotics violations in Kershaw County.

Conant was arrested at the Kershaw County Courthouse by an alert deputy who knew about the warrant, Matthews said. From the courthouse, Conant was transported to the Kershaw County Detention Center where he remains pending a bond hearing.

Following Conant's arrest, Kershaw County Sheriff's Office narcotics investigators executed a search warrant at Conant's residence. Deputies found the remnants of a methamphetamine manufacturing operation, but did not seize a sufficient quantity of methamphetamine to warrant additional charges, Mathews said. Deputies did locate and seize a large quantity of pornographic materials that focused on underage girls.

Records show Conant has previous arrests for numerous narcotics violations and is out on bond for charges of manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine and simple possession of marijuana.
