According to Apple, 40 billion app's have been downloaded from the Apple App Store since 2012 and now a small South Carolina company has a small part in those numbers and on some top ten lists around the world.

It started with a phone call a few months into Crisie Smith's maternity leave.

"When he first brought the idea of doing a candy app I remember going 'ok great what exactly is that?'" said Crisie with KC's Candy Factory.

Irmo newlyweds Kelvin and Crisie Smith never dreamed they'd make their living off a candy factory but they liked the idea of working for themselves.

Kelvin had the technical skill to bring his sugary dreams to fruition.

"I started sketching on a paper, drawing an iPhone and start sketching in and see exactly how I want it to look," Kelvin said. "I wanted to have a great soundtrack, great UI design, HD quality, Facebook integration."

Kelvin left his job immediately. Two months, thousands of dollars and six programmers later, KC's Candy Factory was formed.

"We started this app in May, but we didn't become satisfied with it until two weeks ago in October," Kelvin said.

Those high standards have led to close to 30,000 downloads worldwide and the distinction of being the only game app developers in the state.

Crisie, Kelvin and his brother Tyrell now devote their full time to creating more apps geared towards educating children.

"I got a whole lot of ideas, I'm excited, I never thought I'd be doing this," Kelvin said. "It's truly a blessing from god."

KC's Candy Factory is free and available now in the Apple Store. An android and Facebook version are slated to be released by the end of the year.
