Winthrop Poll finds SC voters cool to Congress

Posted: Updated:

A new poll from Winthrop University finds the state's electorate is none too happy with Congress following the recent government shutdown.

The poll, surveyed from Oct. 19 - 27, shows 86.5 percent of the 887 respondents disapprove of Congress.

Pollsters also asked who they blamed more for the shutdown, and 47.3 percent pointed the finger at Republicans in Congress while 28.8 percent said it was President Obama's fault.

Congressional Republican approval ratings are also low as only 16.9 percent of respondents approve of the job they are doing. Congressional Democrats fare only marginally better with a 29.5 percent approval rating.

As for the president, Obama's approval ratings in South Carolina have slipped to 40.7 percent, the lowest numbers yet for the two-term president.
