GREENWOOD COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Just days ago, happy children played along Callison Highway, but that laughter has transformed into a deafening silence Tuesday night as police say 27-year-old Bryan Sweatt allegedly executed the parents of his girlfriend, Chandra Fields, and her two nephews aged 9 and 10 in before turning the gun on himself.

"We see them a lot, riding their dirt bike up and down," said Samantha Parente. "Just kids being kids."

Word of the murders spread fast in the small community Wednesday morning

"That was my nephew's babies," said Terry Bilt. "They were great kids."

"Of course as a mom, you think, what if that were my son? What if that were me," said Parente.

But there was also an air of complacency in the air today. Many residents we spoke to say they're simply used to violence in and around their community.

"We hear about death a lot, and a lot of things go on, and to tell you the truth, we go on every day, just not thinking about it after its over with," said Paula Nisha Edgerton.

Law enforcement officials say the incident was likely the result of a domestic dispute, an issue that strikes a chord with Parente, a neighbor from just down the road who recently ended her own abusive relationship.

"Women need to be more aware of what to look for when you're dating someone. What warning signs come about, that you should start getting away from," said Parente.
