The following Perspective is an expression of opinion by the Editorial Board at WIS, and presented by general manager Donita Todd.
As we approach Election Day, if you live in Columbia your choice for mayor should be taken very seriously. There are three candidates running for this office: incumbent Steve Benjamin, Councilman Moe Baddourah and Larry Sypolt. And where they stand on Columbia's many issues is critical.
Strong mayor or not, working with city council, our next mayor will need to explain just how the city plans to pay for Bull Street improvements, how to contain our homeless population in a humane and constructive manner, and what measures will be taken to curb gang activity in Columbia. These particularly thorny matters are crucial to the economic development and quality of life in the city, and we need a mayor with the vision and consensus-building skills to get things done.
Voter turnout has traditionally been low for this election cycle, but I urge you to inform yourselves about the candidates and get out to vote for the man you think will lead Columbia in a positive direction for the next term.
To learn more about the candidates, tune in next Tuesday evening, October 29, to WIS at 7pm for a Columbia Mayor Debate.
That's my perspective.
