USC freshman injured by stray bullet hopes to transfer to rehab clinic soon

Martha Childress Martha Childress
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The family of USC freshman Martha Childress released an update on her condition late Friday.

Martha was injured last weekend by a stray bullet as she was waiting for a taxi in Columbia's Five Points.

"The doctors are still reluctant to remove the chest tube, which is draining excess fluid, but causing her some discomfort," Jim Carpenter, Martha's uncle said in a statement. "In addition, they learned today that she has a cracked rib, which is also causing her some pain. So today was a little rougher for Martha."

Carpenter said the injuries to her vital organs are continuing to heal.

"She seems to be regaining the function of her bodily systems, for which we are very grateful," Carpenter said. "The doctors and the nurses at the hospital have been wonderful, kind, considerate, and compassionate. The support of family and friends has been uplifting and encouraging."

Despite her continued discomfort, the family says they hope to have Martha transferred to the Shepherd's clinic in Atlanta by early next week.

The family had received glowing reports about the clinic earlier this week, but after their visit to the clinic yesterday, they are even more impressed and excited about having Martha there, Carpenter said.

"Let me say again, the family really appreciates the way you all have rallied around Martha and our family with your love and prayers," he said.

The family will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. on Monday in Five Points. After that, the university will host a public forum to address student safety at 4 p.m. at the Russell House on the USC campus.
