Five Points Association opposes street closures, 2 a.m. bar closings

Posted: Updated:

The Five Points Association has come out against some popular proposals supported by the University of South Carolina to try to stop violence in the area.

"The Five Points Association is adamantly opposed to any street closures and mandatory 2 a.m. bar closings," said Amy Beth Franks, the executive director of the Five Points Association.

In an emailed statement Franks said the main reason is because it doesn't address the issue of gang violence.

"The association would welcome the opportunity to share with city officials, the Columbia Police Department and the University of South Carolina, the reasons why these don't address Five Points' real issues and suggest other possible solutions," Franks said.

Franks added the association has been seeking help with the growing gang problem for a number of years, installing over 200 security cameras and employing private security.
