Family of victim increases reward for information on deadly crash

LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) -

The family of a 2011 high school graduate says he was the light of their lives.

Now that he's gone forever, they are living with horrible pain and reminded every day that they don't know exactly what led to the fiery crash that claimed the life of 20-year-old Galen Mallory.

"The first few days we walked around in shock," said his grieving mother Elaine Mallory. "We had to go plan a funeral for a 20-year-old. He was planning on going to college this fall. He came home for lunch that day and I told him he needed to go ahead and register for school the next day as my daughter would have to do. He had so many plans and had so many friends and brought so much joy. And gone."

June 25, 2013 is the day they will remember forever.  It was about 6:30 p.m. when Galen Mallory was driving down Highway 219 in West Point on his way to meet friends.

A witness says a gray SUV two cars ahead of him was weaving in the lane and crossed the center line, forcing a driver coming in the other direction off the road.  That driver was able to avoid the accident, but then he overcorrected and hit Mallory head-on.

The witness says the erratic driver slowed down, but never stopped.  Now three months later, no one has ever heard from that driver, and that's why the family is offering their own money, bringing the total reward for information to $7,000.

Mallory's mother says she will never feel at peace until she knows everything about what happened during the last moment in her son's life. It's the still open-ended investigation that makes an already unbearable loss impossible to accept.

"It's just not the same without him, and he's only twenty-years-old, with life just starting for him...." she said.

The Georgia State Patrol wants to talk with the driver who would have been heading south on Highway 219 at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday June 25, 2013.

Investigators want to stress that this driver is not necessarily going to be charged with a crime. The information that person may be able to add will do a lot to bring closure to this grieving family.
