IRMO, SC (WIS) -

Dr. Stephen Hefner, Superintendent of School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties, had heart bypass surgery Friday morning.

District officials say, "the surgery was a complete success and his prognosis for a speedy recovery is excellent."

Hefner is resting comfortably in the ICU at Providence Hospital and is expected to be moved to a regular hospital room sometime over the weekend, a news release from the district stated.

The surgery was scheduled after a heart catheterization revealed evidence of blockages. Dr. Hefner was upbeat about the surgery and looking forward to a quick and full recovery, officials said.

In Hefner's absence, Mark Bounds, the district's chief information officer, will serve as acting superintendent.

Hefner has been the superintendent of Lexington-Richland School District Five since January 2011. Prior to this appointment, he served as superintendent of nearby Richland School District Two for 16 years.

Hefner's family is very appreciative of the outpouring of support and prayers. Officials said many have expressed interest in sending flowers to Dr. Hefner and his family.

Hefner indicated he would prefer donations be made to the D5 Foundation for Educational Excellence in his name (http://www.district5foundation.org/).

''We're thrilled that Dr. Hefner's surgery went well," said Board of Trustees chair Robert Gantt. "He is an unbelievable educator, leader and friend. We are concerned first and foremost about his health, but we can't wait until he's back leading the District where he belongs. He and his family are in our prayers.''
