COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

One group in Columbus is bringing awareness to the problem of poverty in the Valley in an interesting way.

"Circles" in Columbus is celebrating their one year anniversary by hosting "Poverty Awareness Week".

On Oct. 17 they hosted a kick-off event where group members explained the different events that will be happening all week. They are also giving the public a chance to experience living on a low-income like some people in our community have to do every day.

"We're hoping that through these awareness activities we become just a little bit more educated and knowledgeable about people in our community and what they face every day... So we can respond appropriately," says Meg Olive of Circles.

On Oct. 18 they're hosting a food stamp challenge, where participants agree to eat on $4.50 a day.

Mayor Teresa Tomlinson has agreed to take this challenge as well.
