Conway teen recovering after being hit by 18-wheeler in July

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – A Conway teen is home with his family 103 days after he was nearly killed by an 18 wheeler. Friends, family, and neighbors came together to welcome 17-year-old Wesley Baker with a homecoming.

They waited for hours at Wesley's house as he rode in a car with his mom from Charlotte, where he had been recovering at a children's hospital. On July 5, Wesley was hit by an 18-wheeler near his home. Emergency teams revived him multiple times on scene before he was taken to a hospital.

Wesley's right leg was amputated above the knee, and he suffered internal bleeding, and brain trauma.  While his road to recovery will be a long one, his family said one major obstacle is now behind them because he is home.

"Just getting home with my babies because it's heart breaking, but we know we're blessed," said Wesley's mother Debbie Phipps.

Wesley's dad Cameron said he can already see a difference in his son after having him home for just a few minutes. "He's fought this hard and he's going to continue and I can already tell a difference from the hospital to here."

Phipps said it will take a lot of hard work in the recovery process, but Wesley is making it little by little each day. "I fed him ice cream last night," said Phipps.  "I gave him a spoonful."
