Man dies after falling off boat on Lake Murray

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A Lexington County man died on Lake Murray Sunday after falling off a boat, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

The incident happened around 4:30 Sunday afternoon in the Gilbert area of Lake Murray, according to DNR's Robert McCullough.  He says the man was on a boat with his wife and sister when he fell off.

Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman identified the man as 65-year-old Russell Fitzgerald of Gilbert. Harman called it a drowning fatality.

Fitzgerald's wife jumped in to try to help him while the sister flagged down another boat, according to McCullough.

EMS was able to respond by boat to the scene but he died on the way to the hospital.  McCullough says Fitzgerald lived on Lake Murray.

The incident remains under investigation by the coroner's office.
