BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

South Carolina State Rep. Shannon Erickson said the murder of William "Alex" Apps, the 25-year-old College of Charleston student and Beaufort native who was killed while trying to sell his car on Craigslist, is a huge blow to the Beaufort community.

Erickson's son was a close friend of Apps growing up.

She says Apps was a great young man who loved his mother more than anyone in the world.

"He was always close with his mother," said Erickson.

Erickson said their bond was unbreakable, made stronger when the two had to deal with his father being murdered while Apps was a student at Beaufort Academy. Apps, being the only child, devoted his life to his mother.

"His mom is a little thing and Alex grew to be a pretty big boy and I can picture him with his arm around his mom, and I think I'll always remember him that way," Erickson said.

She will always remember the little boy with good manners and a "wealth of knowledge" who spent years playing in her back yard.

"He was the kind of young man that you wanted your son to hang out with," she siad. "He was very thoughtful. He would complement you. He would take out the trash."

As Erickson look at an old picture of her son and Apps' old soccer team, she started to cry, thinking about Apps' mother and how she's forced to deal with death, again.

"She's a very quiet soul, but she's a very good lady and she had a very good son," she said.

Erickson said will will always wonder how something so awful could happen to someone so good.
