Some federal workers back at McEntire following shutdown furloughs

MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE (WIS) -

The government shutdown caused hundreds of civilian workers to be furloughed at military bases here in the midlands. While the shutdown isn't over, a lot of those employees are back at work.

Some workers returned to McEntire Joint National Guard Base. There are 307 technicians there and most were targeted in the furloughs. Until leadership moved to identify those who would be considered essential, or as military officials would rather say "acceptable", and should be spared from any furlough.

A few days ago, good news arrived from the Defense Department as they ordered civilian employees back who contribute to the "morale, well being, capabilities and readiness of service members."

At McEntire, those would be virtually all of the 307 technicians.

The situation may be different for federal workers not linked to the military.

A visit today to the Strom Thurmond Building in downtown Columbia indicated activities there are still scaled back.
