DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A police chase in the Pee Dee late Tuesday night ended with a fatal crash into a Hartsville Police Department cruiser.
The driver who died has been identified by Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee as 51-year-old Leroy Roberson.
The chase started in Lee County after a van turned around to avoid a checkpoint, said Captain Andy Locklair with the Darlington County Sheriff's Office. The trooper went to stop him, and that's when the chase started.
The chase continued into Hartsville on Highway 15, then went to Darlington, then back to Hartsville through the Oats Community, where the van struck a Hartsville Police cruiser at about 11 p.m., Capt. Locklair said.
According to a post on the Darlington County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, the car crashed into the cruiser at the intersection of Highway 151 and Highway 15 in Hartsville.
Capt. Locklair confirmed the driver of the van was killed in the crash.
The Hartsville Police Department was assisting with the chase, Capt. Locklair said, but the HPD vehicle was not chasing the van at the time.
