Deputy, vehicle struck at crash scene

A Newberry County deputy was struck by a vehicle Monday night while standing by at a traffic accident.

The Newberry County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a suspicious vehicle call at approximately 11:40 p.m. on Highway 395 near Mendenhall Road. When the deputy arrived, it was determined that the vehicle had struck a deer.

As the officer was standing by at the accident, a green Mustang approached the scene, left the roadway, struck the deputy's patrol vehicle, and crossed a ditch toward the deputy. The deputy attempted to avoid the oncoming vehicle, but it still struck him on the leg.

The deputy was treated and released from Newberry Hospital for minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Tonya Dawn Crapps, 39, of Prosperity. She was charged with reckless driving by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

"This is another example of the many dangers that law enforcement officers face," said Sheriff Lee Foster. "This seemingly routine call could have turned deadly had it not been for the quick actions of the deputy to avoid the oncoming car. In a day and time where law enforcement seems to be scapegoat for all that is wrong with government, please remember that these men and women are doing their best to honorably serve and protect in extremely difficult circumstances."
