EDISTO BEACH, SC (WIS/WCSC) - Authorities may not know for another month what killed a Columbia man and a woman from Michigan after the two were found dead in a hot tub in Edisto Beach last week.

Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said Monday preliminary autopsies were completed for 78-year-old Raymond Trewhella, of Columbia, and 80-year-old Ruth Elizabeth Ellis, of Michigan.

Harvey said it could take four weeks to determine an official cause of death.

Authorities say Ellis was visiting the beach for her grandson's wedding on Saturday. She and Trewhella were found dead in a hot tub on the back deck of a home at 3416 Palmetto Boulevard just before 9 a.m. Friday, according to an Edisto Beach police incident report.

Police Chief Bill Coffey said the deaths were not considered suspicious, and called the situation "a tragedy."

According to an online obituary, Trewhella was an executive for Glassmaster Co. in Lexington for forty years, retiring as Chairman and CEO in 2007.

In his early career, Ray developed a capacitor for the missile and space program while serving as a senior engineer for GE Company. He also lettered in basketball at the University of South Carolina.

The investigation is ongoing.
