The following Perspective is an expression of opinion by the Editorial Board at WIS and presented by General Manager Donita Todd:
I read with a heavy heart that Volkswagen will no longer be
producing the VW Bus, the proverbial "hippie van" of the 60s. The last VW
bus will roll off the assembly line in Sao Paulo, Brazil, December 31, bringing
an end to this iconic symbol of free-wheeling, counter culture transportation.
Nearly everyone my age had a VW bus experience. Camping in a VW bus pop-up camper with six or seven people lying head to toe….A classic VW bus experience. Heading to the next concert venue with your best friends piled into a VW bus….a classic VW bus experience. No air bags, no seat belts….classic VW bus experience. Freedom, cheap roomy transportation, cool vibes….all part of the classic VW bus experience.
It's best summed up by every hitchhiker smile when he looks down the road, and sees that iconic shape of the next vehicle coming along, and thinks "ah, a VW Bus! My luck has just turned!" A classic VW bus experience.
That's my perspective. What's yours?
