Elderly man killed after stopping on I-26, coroner says

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Authorities have identified an 89-year-old man who died following a wreck on Interstate 26 near the College Park Road exit early Monday morning in Berkeley County.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said Albert Szczepkowski of Bradenton, Fla. died after the crash around 12:01 a.m. on the eastbound side of the interstate.

South Carolina Highway Patrol said Szczepkowski, driving a 2013 Nissan, stopped in traffic, blocking two lanes.  A 57-year-old man driving a 2005 Pontiac then came up from behind and hit the Nissan.

Szczepkowski was not wearing a seatbelt.  He was taken to Trident Hospital for treatment but sucummbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Pontiac was not injured.

The coroner's office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
