COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley's charitable foundation announced its Neighbors Helping Neighbors Statewide Book Drive has yielded 20,000 books.

Haley, The Original Six Foundation's Board of Directors, and representatives from AT&T and NBSC gathered to announce the results of the book drive in Columbia Thursday afternoon.

Highlighting the effort was a boy scout's donation of 4,400 books. 16-year-old Wil Carpenter of Lake Wylie collected the books as part of his Eagle Scout Project.

NBSC collected another 1,500 books.

The event had over 50 volunteers to sort through the books and organize them based on age level.

The book drive collected gently used and new children's and South Carolina history books at all 67 DMVs across South Carolina and NBSC bank branches from August 5 through August 17.

The books will be donated to libraries, schools, and after school programs in the rural counties The Original Six Foundation serves, which include: Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Clarendon, Marion, Marlboro, and Union counties.
