A 9-year-old boy died following an accident in the town of Whitmire Monday evening, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The incident happened around 6:35 p.m. on Church Street at Odell Street just east of Whitmire.

Troopers say as the boy was exiting a private driveway on his bicycle he hit the side of a westbound tractor-trailer. He was not wearing a bicycle helmet.

Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton identified the boy as Bennett Dalton.

Dalton was treated at the scene and then airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital.

Newton said the boy died a 9:09 p.m. at the hospital from multiple system injuries, according to hospital staff.

"This is truly a tragic loss for this family and community," said Newton. "Our prayers are with Bennett's loved ones and friends during this very difficult time."

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The Highway Patrol continues to investigate. Whitmire Police, the Newberry County Sheriff's Department, and the Newberry Coroners Office are assisting.
