CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – Retired Lt. General James B. Vaught was found dead yesterday, according to Horry County Coroner Robert Edge.

Coroner Edge said Gen. Vaught went to a pond off Old Reaves Ferry Rd., and when he didn't return home his family called 911. Emergency responders found his body in the pond, and they believe he fell off of his pontoon boat into the water.

According to WMBF News partner, My Horry News, Lt. General Vaught was a veteran of three U.S. armed conflicts who's believed to be a direct descendent of Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion.

Coroner Edge said Gen. Vaught was vocal and active in local politics. Gen. Vaught was 86-years-old.
