Elections Director: Strong mayor petition results coming soon

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Just hours after the Columbia City Council voted in favor of holding a referendum on the issue of strong mayor only if a pro-strong mayor petition was certified, Richland County's head of elections says he'll deliver the petition's results soon.

Richland County Elections Director Howard Jackson says they've spent the majority of Thursday morning working on the quality checks of the more than 12,000 petition signatures that were submitted last week by a group aiming to change Columbia's form of government.

That petition needed 15 percent, or just over 11,000 signatures, of Columbia's eligible voters to be considered valid.

If Jackson's office finds enough of the signatures to be valid, the city of Columbia will hold a refendum on strong mayor on Dec. 3.

City Council will also have to vote on an ordinance before the Nov. 5 general election to set the salary and benefits package for a strong mayor. They'll need to hold two votes and they've already set two public meetings for the month of October.
