Cooler weather an open invitation for insects in your home

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – As temperatures drop, the lure of open windows in your home is one of the best draws of fall weather. But that window could be an open invitation for some pretty disgusting, unwanted houseguests.

"They live in palm trees, that's where you get the name palmetto bugs," said Lennie Johnson with Lane's Professional Pest Elimination. "When it gets cool at night, they're going to feel that warm air as you open the door. It's a nice place for them to come on in and visit."

The palmetto bug, also known as the American cockroach, isn't as unsanitary as it's close cousin, the German cockroach, but can still carry some diseases like dysentery.

Johnson says pest control companies can treat your home for the bugs, but because they live outside, and can fly in from palmetto trees through an open door or window, another infestation can start up quickly.

Johnson says the some of the best preventive measures are as simple as trimming trees and keeping windows shut.

Johnson also says if you've got a lot of waste from yard work, keep it far away from your house.

"They also like mulch, pine straw, leaves, a lot of stuff around your house," he said.
