Community groups divided over CMPD shooting

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Emotions are pushed to the brink over another case that reminds us of Charlotte's divisive past.

However, some community organizations are calling for cooler heads and calmer voices over the shooting death of Jonathan Ferrell.

CMPD Officer Randall Kerrick is charged in the case.

Police say he fired his weapon 12 times and hit Ferrell with 10 bullets.

Willie Ratchford heads Community Relations Committee.

"This is not the time to be emotional," he said."Obviously this is a very tragic situation. There are folk in the community who are angry."

On Monday, Charlotte NAACP President Kojo Natambu, said Jonathan Ferrell was executed.

One day later he isn't backing down and released a statement that said in part."It smells more of hatred and rage which shows that Mr. Kerrick was predisposed in killing a Black Man and did so with extreme prejudice."

Dr. Patrick Graham leads the Urban League of the Central Carolinas and is encouraging people not to rush to judgment.

"We've got so much in the air here in North Carolina that every little spark causes us to react without thinking intellectually," he said.

Among those who agree with him is Dianne English of the Community Building Initiative.

"We could be the woman whose door was knocked on. We could be the mother of a police officer. We could be the brother of Jonathan Ferrell. We could be in that story any of us could be, "English said.

This is also a story that brings out previous incidents.

Graham said, "dialogues aren't gonna do it anymore. They have to be dialogues that lead to some action."

Discussions are underway among several groups to possibly hold a community forum in coming weeks.
