COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

If you see some unusual activity in the skies over Columbia today, don't be alarmed.

The South Carolina Air National Guard's 169th Fighter Wing will be conducting an exercise near Jim Hamilton - L.B. Owens Field from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Those who are in the area during that time may see a single-engine aircraft being escorted by fighter jets.

Such exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure the rapid response capability associated with the SCANG's Aerospace Control Alert mission.

The McEntire unit is a critical component of the strategic force that is poised 24/7 to respond to airborne threats over the United States.
