Coroner: Ariel Castro's family to claim his body

Ariel Castro Ariel Castro
FRANKLIN COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

The Franklin County Coroner tells 19 Action News that Ariel Castro's next of kin will claim his body today.

As of 1 p.m. Thursday, the coroner was preparing the body to leave. She did not have any details where the body was going for funeral arrangements.

The convicted kidnapper and rapist used a bed sheet to hang himself in his cell on Tuesday night at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, OH in Pickaway County.

Castro was sentenced on August 1 to life in prison, plus 1,000 years, for kidnapping and sexually assaulting Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus while holding them captive in his Seymour Avenue house for over a decade.

According to Reporter Ed Gallek, no prison guards or employees have been put on any kind of leave or suspension in wake of Castro's suicide - yet.
