Authorities say three students and a bus driver are being checked out at an area hospital after the school bus they were riding in collided with an SCE&G SUV Thursday morning.

According to a spokesperson with Lexington School District Two, the crash happened at the intersection of Old Wire Road and Highway 21 in West Columbia.

South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers say the bus was heading south on Highway 21 when it collided with the SUV that was traveling west on Old Wire Road.  A witness reported the bus ended up on top of the SUV.

There were three students and a driver on the bus when the collision happened. All are expected to be okay. The students are being transported to an area hospital for precautionary reasons.

The students were on their way to Busbee Creative Arts Academy in Cayce.

Several Lexington Two Transportation officials, two school nurses, school and district administration reported to the scene of the accident as well as Lexington County Fire and Rescue.

District Assistant Superintendent Jim Hinton said, "Lexington School District Two is very fortunate to have the response teams of county police, fire, and rescue who were on the scene quickly and understand the urgency when students are involved."

It is unclear if anyone inside the SUV was injured. SCE&G confirmed the driver of the SUV is an employee with the power company.

The Highway Patrol is investigating.

The district says it will cooperate fully with the state and the county officials.
