(WMC-TV) - Kindness is taking over the city of Memphis and beyond as many Mid-Southerners are paying it forward in honor of a young nurse

The murder of David Santucci sent shock waves through many in the community after he was killed on South Main. Many people were afraid and angry including his friends, but they decided to turn fear on its face.

"The movement's just been insane how people have responded," said friend Justin Hurley.

Hurley and Drew Fryman wanted to remember their friend David Santucci in a way that testified to how he lived his life. So Fryman called Hurley with the perfect plan to pay it forward.

"What if we leave a really big tip for somebody and just leave a little message about David?" said Hurley recalling the start of the campaign. "I jumped onboard immediately, I thought it was just a great idea."

First stop was Chili's in Cordova.

"We left a pretty sizable tip on a pretty small tab," said Hurley."We did the same thing at another restaurant."

Then the giving spread to Florida and even Rome. To see photos of people paying it forward, click here.

"I guess just seeing how far it's spread from our core group of friends to people who know people, who know people, who know us kind of thing ... It's pretty cool," said Fryman.

Santucci, 27, had just begun a nursing career with Methodist Hospital when he was shot and killed almost four weeks ago in downtown Memphis.

For these childhood friends there was an immediate desire for revenge. But they changed their focus and decided to pay it forward after seeing forgiveness from Santucci's Mom.

"It's kind of selfish of us to sit there and say man, 'I really want to be face to face with these guys' And then [the mom] sit there and say, 'I' ll be face to face with them and forgive them and tell them that Jesus loves them," said Fryman.

Hurley says paying it forward by doing something as small as buying a cup of coffee for someone is a great way to honor Santucci.
