Now departing: 30 daily Delta flights to be cut

(WMC-TV) - The airline that once called Memphis home announced it is moving its hub. This will not only mean fewer flights out of Memphis, but it will also mean fewer jobs.

Delta Air Lines will cut daily flights here from nearly 100 to around 60 Tuesday. Aside from its negative impact on the city, many travelers worry they will lose direct flights to popular cities. But they do say they hope the loss of Delta flights will be an opportunity for another airline to help fill the MEM lobby.

Action News 5 reported in June that Tuesday's scale backs are expected to impact more than 200 local airport customer service and cargo jobs.

An internal company memo claimed high fuel costs and other factors made Memphis unprofitable as a hub.

Linda Morgan and her husband are originally from Memphis, but now live in Miami. They say a decrease in direct flights make it harder to visit.

"It was easier to go non-stop, so we had to take a different carrier," she said.

Mary McDonald flies about four times a week for business and says she spends a lot of time connecting after she leaves Memphis.

"You do a lot of layovers in different airports. We used to have a lot of direct flights out of here, but I'm very hopeful," said McDonald.

Other people are hopeful that other interested airlines see Delta's cutbacks as an opportunity to come in and serve Mid-South travelers.
