SUMTER, SC (WIS) -

Nearly two dozen football players were injured Saturday when the team bus crashed on the way back to the school after a scrimmage.

Sumter School District Spokesperson Shelly Galloway tells WIS the 8th grade football team was returning to Alice Drive Middle School after a scrimmage Saturday at Hillcrest Middle School when the bus crashed into a tree. The crash occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on 521 north of Sumter.

12 students were taken to the hospital with what Galloway said were injuries that were not life-threatening.  10 more students were taken to the hospital by their parents. Galloway said one of the kids was later transported to a hospital in Columbia, but all other students have been released.

Galloway said the head football coach was driving the bus and was taken to the hospital.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the bus was headed south on 521 when the driver swerved to avoid a vehicle that was stopped in the road in front of the bus.  The bus went off the road and hit a tree. Troopers cited the bus driver with driving too fast for conditions.

35 kids were aboard the bus.

The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
