The Newberry County Coroner's office has identified a man who drowned while swimming in a Newberry County creek Saturday afternoon.

An autopsy revealed 42-year-old Christian Eugene Pearson of Whitmire drowned.

Sheriff Lee Foster tells WIS Pearson was with family members in Heller's Creek off Broad River Road near Peake and waded about a half-mile into the water when he went under.

That area is a pump storage facility where the water level rises and falls.

"The water comes up and goes back down and is turning power over at the pump storage facility," Foster said. "The water was coming up at the time he went missing."

The incident was reported at about 1:30 Saturday afternoon. Dive teams from Newberry County, Union County and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources found Pearson's body about three hours later not far from where he was last seen.
