A Clemson student was killed in a wreck on a deadly stretch of Interstate 26 between Summerville and I-95 on Thursday.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a 21-year-old Summerville woman died late Wednesday when her car ran into some trees beside the road. The victim was Rachel McBryde Kam-Johnson.
Kam-Johnson was enrolled at Clemson and was going to be studying abroad this semester, according to the director of media relations for the university Robin Denny.
The part of Interstate 26 where she died is known for being dangerous with over 40 people dying in the area over a four year period.
The state Transportation Department wants to spend $5 million to cut trees in the median along 30 miles of the interstate and put up a cable guardrail.
But state lawmakers said the trees could not be removed without approval of the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments. The council is looking into other options after objections from lawmakers and others to the plan.
Between 2007 and 2011, 44 people were killed and more than 700 were hurt in almost 2,000 crashes along the stretch of interstate.
